Thanksgiving Day Interesting Facts

1) Every year the President of the United States, "pardons" a turkey on the night before Thanksgiving. This tradition began more than 50 years ago with Harry Truman and has continued ever since. The pardoned turkey lives its remaining days at the Kidwell Farm, a petting zoo in Virginia.
2) Americans consume about 18.5 pounds of turkey each year.
3) There are three U.S. cities named after the turkey: Turkey, TX, Turkey Creek, LA, and Turkey, NC.
4) There are eight cities in the U.S. named after the cranberry.
5) There are 20 U.S. cities named Plymouth.
6) At one time, both the turkey and the bald eagle were national symbols of America.
7) According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, one-sixth of the 300 million turkeys sold each year are sold for Thanksgiving.
8) Turkeys have great hearing, but no external ears.
